Donating Blood for Oneself, Is It Possible?

When we are participating in Blood Donation, we know that our blood goes to other people who need it. However, some of us might have wondered: what if the person that needs the blood is me? Can I donate my blood just for my personal use when I need it someday? Turns out that such auto blood donation like that exists, and the donor is called Autologous donor, as opposed from the common blood donor who donates for other people. Usually, someone use this type of Blood Donation to save some blood supply when he or she is scheduled for a surgery.

Donating blood for oneself is required if he or she is facing a major surgery while having rare blood type or blood cell condition, which makes it difficult to find from regular blood donors. That is why this type of Blood Donation can only be done with doctor’s prescriptions. Before the process, your physical condition will be checked thoroughly to make sure that the process can be done. The requirements are just the same; you must not have any infection or severe health condition, you must avoid caffeine, alcohol and certain medications, and you must consume iron rich meals or iron supplement days before donation.

Blood Donation Types You Should Know About

When we hear the word Blood Donation, most of us only know that it means having at least a pint of your blood drawn to meet the need of sick or injured people. However, it is only one out of several types of donations that are available in medical field. Since blood consist of several aspects such as blood plasma and platelets, there are other Blood Donation types conducted by Red Cross organizations or hospitals, depend on their needs. If you are a frequent blood donor and is seeking different way to contribute to local blood drives, it is good for you to know other donation types.

Besides the common Blood Donation type that is known as whole blood donation, there is also a donation type in which the donation officer or nurse takes only your red blood cells, returning the plasma and platelets back into your body. This is called the double red cell donation and conducted by a special machine called aphaeresis machine. This type is recommended for people with O, A negative, and B negative blood type. The same machine is also used to conduct the plasma and platelet aphaeresis donations that go on the other way of double red cell donation.
